Sabres Practice Report: Sam Carrick Nears Return for Round 2

0

The Buffalo Sabres received a significant boost on the ice at KeyBank Center on Tuesday. Sam Carrick rejoined his teammates for practice as preparations continue for Wednesday’s series opener against the Montreal Canadiens.

The veteran fourth-line center has been sidelined since March 31. He injured his left arm during a fight with New York Islanders forward Anders Lee.

While the medical team initially projected a four-to-eight-week recovery timeline for the unusual injury, Carrick has progressed rapidly. Tuesday marked exactly five weeks since the incident. Head coach Lindy Ruff indicated the veteran is now absorbing contact in practice. Furthermore, his fitness levels are excellent, making his return to the lineup a day-to-day decision.

Immediate Impact and Faceoff Value

Carrick skated with extra forwards Tanner Pearson and Josh Dunne during Tuesday’s session. However, the Sabres will likely maintain their Game 6 lineup from the Boston series for Wednesday’s opener. This means Alex Lyon will start in net, and Logan Stanley will remain on the third defensive pairing.

When Carrick does draw back in, he brings a much-needed skill set against Montreal. The right-handed center dominated the faceoff dot in March, winning 57.3 percent of his draws overall and over 60 percent in the defensive zone.

This right-handed presence is vital. The Canadiens recently controlled the faceoff circle against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Additionally, the Sabres utilized left-handed centers Josh Dunne and Tyson Kozak on the fourth line during the opening round, making a right-handed draw a clear priority for the coaching staff.

Beyond faceoffs, Carrick found immediate chemistry with winger Beck Malenstyn. During their time together at five-on-five, Buffalo significantly outshot and outscored their opponents. The duo plays a fast, heavy forechecking style that meshes perfectly together.

Teammates recognize the difficulty of getting traded and immediately suffering an injury. Yet, the locker room is eager to welcome back his production. Carrick scored five goals in just 13 games prior to the injury, including crucial third-period winners during a western road trip.

Konsta Helenius Promoted to Main Group

In addition to Carrick’s progress, top prospect Konsta Helenius skated with the main roster on Tuesday. The 2024 first-round pick was recently recalled from the Rochester Americans to serve as a playoff extra.

Normally, these extra players skate in a separate group. However, a lower-body injury to Noah Ostlund created a vacancy down the middle during practice drills. Ruff utilized the 19-year-old Finn to fill that center role for the day.

Helenius enjoyed a stellar sophomore campaign in the AHL this season, tying for the team lead with 62 points in 63 games. He also notched four points during a brief nine-game NHL stint earlier this year.

Round 2 Watch Party Details

For fans looking to gather for the second round, the Sabres have announced a full slate of events to take on Montreal.

The organization will host free, non-ticketed Sabrehood Block Parties at Canalside for every home game. These events open two hours before puck drop, and fans are encouraged to RSVP online.

For away matchups, Seneca Resorts & Casinos and the Sabrehood Bar Network will host official watch parties featuring alumni appearances and drink specials. If the series requires a Game 6 on Saturday, May 16, KeyBank Center will open its doors for a ticketed viewing party on the video board. Tickets for that potential event will cost five dollars, with all proceeds benefiting the Buffalo Sabres Foundation.
