Nineteen years of playoff frustration finally vanished on Friday night inside TD Garden. The Buffalo Sabres are officially moving on to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Buffalo dispatched the Boston Bruins with a decisive 4-1 victory in Game 6. The triumphant road win secured the franchise’s first postseason series victory since their memorable run to the Eastern Conference Final back in 2007.
The Sabres stepped onto the ice with a reworked defensive group, slotting Michael Kesselring into the lineup for Logan Stanley. Despite the tweak on the blue line, Buffalo executed a nearly flawless road game to close out their division rival.
A Dominant First Period Sets the Tone
Buffalo established control immediately. Alex Tuch opened the scoring just over three minutes into the contest. He tapped the puck in at the right post after receiving a beautiful feed from Rasmus Dahlin at the bottom of the face-off circle. Tage Thompson also picked up an assist on the play.
Just nine minutes later, the Sabres extended their lead. Mattias Samuelsson fired a wrist shot from the top of the left circle that navigated through heavy traffic and beat a heavily screened Jeremy Swayman.
While the offense clicked, goaltender Alex Lyon was the true backbone of the opening frame. Lyon turned away an early breakaway attempt from Casey Mittelstadt and later flashed the pads for a point-blank robbery on Elias Lindholm.
Weathering the Boston Storm
The Bruins pushed back hard in the middle frame, relying on a physical forecheck that generated forty-three total hits on the night.
Boston finally broke through early in the second period. David Pastrnak forced a neutral zone turnover with a heavy hit on Ryan McLeod. Pastrnak then rushed up the ice and buried a one-timer off a feed from Pavel Zacha to cut the Buffalo lead in half.
Despite the intense pressure and trailing in the faceoff circle, the Sabres maintained their composure. The defensive unit blocked nineteen shots, and Lyon stood tall to preserve the one-goal advantage heading into the final intermission.
Putting the Nail in the Coffin
Buffalo completely silenced the Boston crowd early in the third period thanks to an incredible effort play.
Josh Doan outworked two Boston defenders to win a footrace for a loose puck deep in the left corner. He immediately centered the puck to a wide-open Zach Benson in the slot. Benson snapped a shot past Swayman’s glove to restore the two-goal cushion.
Benson was a menace all night, drawing three separate penalties against a frustrated Boston squad.
Josh Norris then sealed the victory in the final minutes. Returning to the lineup for the first time since Game 2, Norris fired the puck into an empty net to lock in the 4-1 final score.
Lyon finished the evening with twenty-five saves, earning the first star of the game. Since entering the series in relief during Game 2, the Buffalo netminder has stopped 106 of 111 shots.
Looking Ahead to Round 2
The Sabres will now await their second-round opponent. They will face the winner of the series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Tampa Bay Lightning. That matchup is currently tied up, with a decisive Game 7 scheduled for Sunday.
Because Buffalo clinched the Atlantic Division crown during the regular season, they will have guaranteed home-ice advantage in the next round regardless of who wins on Sunday.
Fans looking to pack the arena for Round 2 need to act fast. Season Ticket Members will receive exclusive presale access for tickets. After that window closes, a very limited number of seats will go on sale to the general public on Saturday, May 2 at 3:00 p.m. Fans are highly encouraged to get into the online queue at Sabres.com/Playoffs well before the launch time.
Additionally, the organization confirmed that the popular Sabrehood Block Parties will continue outside the arena for every single home game throughout the rest of the playoffs.
