Rasmus Dahlin Secures Historic Norris Trophy Nomination

Buffalo Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin has officially been named a finalist for the James Norris Memorial Trophy. The Professional Hockey Writers Association determines the award each year to recognize the top defenseman in the National Hockey League.

Dahlin joins Colorado Avalanche stalwart Cale Makar and Columbus Blue Jackets standout Zach Werenski as the top three vote-getters for this season. Consequently, the Buffalo captain has a chance to make franchise history. The winner will be announced in June.

Chasing Sabres History

If he takes home the hardware, Dahlin will become the very first player in Sabres history to win the Norris Trophy. Furthermore, he is only the second player in franchise history to even be named a finalist, joining former Buffalo captain Jim Schoenfeld who earned the nod back in the 1979-80 season.

This recognition feels incredibly earned after a monumental year. The twenty-seven-year-old blueliner drove the Sabres to a massive 50-23-9 record, accumulating 109 points. Because of his leadership, Buffalo clinched an Atlantic Division title and secured their first postseason berth since 2011. The team is currently battling the Montreal Canadiens in the second round, with Game 2 scheduled for Friday night at KeyBank Center.

Dominating Both Ends of the Ice

Dahlin put together an absolute masterclass of a regular season. He finished with a career-high 74 points, tallying 19 goals and 55 assists across 77 games. Additionally, his 52 even-strength points put him just slightly behind Edmonton’s Evan Bouchard for the league lead among defensemen. He also led the Buffalo roster in takeaways while finishing second in hits and fifth in blocked shots.

However, the complete totality of his game is what truly set him apart from his peers. Advanced metrics show he ranked first in hits and five-on-five puck battles won when compared to the league’s other top-six scoring defensemen. He also ranked third among that elite group in limiting five-on-five scoring chances against.

His offensive flair also led to some unforgettable moments this year. Fans will undoubtedly remember his five-point masterclass against Toronto, which featured his first career hat trick. Just a few weeks later, he recorded a Gordie Howe hat trick during an unforgettable 8-7 shootout victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

High Praise from Hockey Royalty

The captain’s elite two-way play certainly caught the attention of league legends. Hall of Fame defenseman Chris Pronger championed the Buffalo captain as his personal pick for the Norris during an April television broadcast. The former trophy winner praised the Sabres defender for his relentless compete level, his ability to agitate top opposing players, and his overall talent for driving the offensive rush.

Head coach Lindy Ruff also shared his immense pride earlier this week. The veteran coach reflected on how rewarding it has been to watch the young star get drafted by Buffalo, develop his game in Western New York, and finally experience the electric atmosphere of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

A Masterclass in Perseverance

Beyond his on-ice dominance, the Sabres captain is also a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. This specific honor highlights the player who best showcases incredible perseverance, sportsmanship, and overall dedication to the game of hockey.

Dahlin played this incredible season while navigating an incredibly difficult personal situation. Last September, he announced that his fiancee, Carolina Matovac, was recovering from an emergency heart transplant. He subsequently took a personal leave of absence in November to support her recovery.

He ultimately returned to the lineup on November 15 for a comeback victory in Detroit. From that moment forward, he established himself as a dominant force and cemented his legacy as one of the premier defensemen in the world.

The Norris Trophy winner will be revealed at the NHL Awards later this summer. Stay tuned to SabresHub for ongoing coverage of the playoffs and awards season.
