Rasmus Dahlin Named Masterton Trophy Finalist

The National Hockey League has officially recognized what fans in Buffalo have known all season. Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin is a finalist for the 2025-26 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. This prestigious honor recognizes the player who best showcases perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the game of hockey.

The Professional Hockey Writers Association revealed the top three vote-getters on Monday. Joining Dahlin as finalists are Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog and Winnipeg Jets forward Jonathan Toews.

Leading Through Heartbreak and Hope

Dahlin anchored the Buffalo blue line and guided the franchise to its first playoff appearance since 2011. However, his on-ice achievements tell only a fraction of his story.

During a summer vacation in France, his fiancee, Carolina Matovac, suffered sudden heart failure. She spent weeks on life support before undergoing a successful emergency heart transplant. Tragically, the couple also lost their unborn child during this traumatic medical ordeal.

Throughout the grueling months of hospitalization and rehabilitation, Dahlin balanced his professional responsibilities with his family’s critical needs. He took temporary leaves of absence in November, during the holidays, and after the Olympics to visit Matovac in Sweden.

His teammates marveled at his mental resilience behind closed doors. The locker room recognized his unwavering leadership and his ability to remain a difference-maker on the ice despite the immense emotional toll. Ultimately, Matovac recovered enough to join Dahlin in Western New York this spring. The KeyBank Center crowd welcomed her with an emotional standing ovation during the March 25 matchup against the Boston Bruins.

Reaching New Heights on the Ice

Despite missing four regular-season matchups, the Sabres captain produced the best statistical campaign of his young career. Dahlin racked up a career-high 74 points, placing him sixth overall among defensemen across the league. His ability to produce at a star level under such heavy personal weight truly embodies the spirit of the Masterton Trophy.

A Strong Class of Finalists

The other two nominees also bring remarkable comeback stories to the table. Landeskog returned to the Avalanche lineup after missing three entire seasons due to severe knee injuries and multiple complex surgeries. Even after suffering broken ribs this January, he remained a vital piece of Colorado’s Presidents’ Trophy-winning roster.

Meanwhile, Toews stepped away from professional hockey for over two years to battle chronic health issues, including long Covid. After seeking specialized treatments abroad, the veteran center signed with his hometown Jets. He subsequently led the league in faceoff win percentage and played a full 82-game schedule.

Chasing Franchise History

The Masterton Trophy was established in 1968 to honor the late Minnesota North Stars player Bill Masterton. Additionally, a charitable grant is awarded annually in the winner’s name to a scholarship fund in Minnesota.

If Dahlin wins the award, he will become just the third player in Buffalo franchise history to receive the honor. He would join hockey legends Don Luce, who won in 1975, and Pat LaFontaine, who claimed the award in 1995.
