BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Buffalo Sabres are playing like a team that has forgotten how to lose.
Behind a milestone-filled night and a first career hat trick from Jack Quinn, the Sabres handled the San Jose Sharks 6-3 on Tuesday night at KeyBank Center. The victory marks Buffalo’s eighth consecutive win, further cementing their status as the hottest team in the NHL and inching them closer to snapping that well-documented 14-season playoff drought.
With a record of 40-19-6, the Sabres (29-5-2 in their last 36 games) now sit atop the Atlantic Division, playing a brand of hockey that blends high-octane skill with a newfound physical edge.
Quick Start, Heavy Response
Buffalo wasted no time asserting dominance. Just over four minutes in, Quinn opened his account by converting a 2-on-1 rush off a feed from Jason Zucker. Before the crowd could settle back into their seats, Alex Tuch doubled the lead, deflecting a Rasmus Dahlin point shot. It was a historic night for Tuch, who celebrated his 600th NHL game by recording his 300th career point as a Sabre.
While San Jose’s teenage phenom Macklin Celebrini cut the lead in half midway through the first, the period ended with a statement of a different kind. Newcomer Logan Stanley dropped the gloves with Zack Ostapchuk, followed immediately by Beck Malenstyn sparking a secondary bout with Barclay Goodrow after a massive hit on Celebrini.
Breaking it Open
The Sabres’ depth took over in the second frame. Malenstyn capped off a brilliant individual effort, dancing around defenseman Sam Dickinson to beat Yaroslav Askarov glove-side. Minutes later, Zucker padded the lead to 4-1, pouncing on a rebound from a Quinn one-timer.
The Sharks refused to go quietly, with Kiefer Sherwood and Alexander Wennberg (power play) keeping the game within reach, but the night belonged to Quinn. The young winger sniped his second of the night just 42 seconds into the third period and eventually sealed the win—and his hat trick—with an empty-netter in the final minutes.
By The Numbers
- Jack Quinn: 3 goals, 1 assist (1st career hat trick).
- Rasmus Dahlin & Ryan McLeod: 3 assists each.
- Alex Lyon: 17 saves, improving to 15-2 in his last 17 starts.
- The Standings: Buffalo’s 40 wins are the second-most for the franchise in the last 15 years.
On the other side, Macklin Celebrini’s goal was his 90th point of the season. At just 19 years old, he reached that mark in 62 games—the third-fastest teenager to do so in NHL history, trailing only Sidney Crosby and Wayne Gretzky.
What’s Next
The Sabres continue their home stand this Thursday as they host the Washington Capitals.
The playoff push is no longer a conversation about “if,” but “when.” If Buffalo keeps finding this level of production from their top six and the grit shown by the bottom of the roster, the atmosphere at KeyBank Center is only going to get louder.
