Pregame: Amerks Look to Break Slide on Bills Day vs. Hartford

0

The Rochester Americans (25-24-5-4) return to Blue Cross Arena this afternoon for a Sunday matinee that feels like a must-win. It’s Bills Day in downtown Rochester, and while the atmosphere will be festive, the stakes are high as the Amerks host the Hartford Wolf Pack (24-31-4-2).

Here is the breakdown for today’s matchup:

A Test of Resilience

Despite a tough 5-3 loss to Syracuse on Friday, the Amerks showed they aren’t ready to quit. After falling behind 5-1, late strikes from Riley Fiddler-Schultz and Carson Meyer made it a game in the final minutes. Head coach Mike Leone showed confidence in his group by pulling Scott Ratzlaff with over three minutes left, but the comeback fell just short.

With Saturday off, the Amerks watched the scoreboard as Hartford fell to Toronto. While the Wolf Pack are out of the division, that result pushed Rochester 13 points back of the Marlies for the fourth spot in the North.

The McCarthy Matchup

The blue line could see a fresh face today—and a family reunion. Gavin McCarthy, the Sabres’ 2023 draft pick and former Boston University captain, is slated to potentially make his pro debut.

If he cracks the lineup, he’ll be staring down his older brother, Case McCarthy. The elder McCarthy has spent the last three seasons jumping between Hartford and the ECHL. Seeing the two former BU teammates go from playing together to facing off in the pros adds a fantastic layer to today’s matinee.

Survival of the Coldest

It’s no secret the Amerks are in a rut, with only one win in their last 12 outings. However, they aren’t the only ones sliding. Both Belleville and Utica have struggled recently, keeping Rochester’s playoff hopes alive.

  • The Advantage: Rochester holds a two-point lead over Belleville with five games in hand.
  • The Chase: Utica sits six points back, but like the Sens, they’ve dropped three straight.

Dominating the Pack

If there is an opponent to help right the ship, it’s Hartford. Historically, the Amerks have owned this matchup, going 14-3-1-2 over the last 18 meetings.

  • Home Ice: Rochester has won six straight at home against the Wolf Pack.
  • Offensive Surge: In that home winning streak, the Amerks have outscored Hartford 31-15.
  • Power Play: 10 of those 31 goals have come on the man-advantage, a trend they’ll look to continue today.

Scouting the Wolf Pack

Hartford arrives sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic Division. While they added veteran firepower like Trey Fix-Wolansky (25 goals this season), they haven’t found much depth. Beyond Fix-Wolansky and Brendan Brisson, the Wolf Pack lack consistent scoring threats and rank in the bottom five league-wide in both goals for and against.

Today marks the end of a five-game road trip for Hartford, and the Amerks will be looking to send them home empty-handed.
