The Rochester Americans’ season is still breathing. Backed against the wall in a must-win Game 2, Devon Levi delivered a masterpiece, stopping all 29 shots he faced to propel the Amerks to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Toronto Marlies on Friday night at The Blue Cross Arena.
The resilient win ties the best-of-three North Division First Round series at one apiece, forcing a decisive, winner-take-all Game 3 on Sunday.
A Fast Start Sets the Tone
The Amerks came out firing in the first period, despite taking an early blow to the lineup with forward Trevor Kuntar missing the game due to an injury. Devon Levi set the tone immediately with a massive early save to keep things scoreless, giving the offense time to find its legs.
After Chris Douglas was denied on a fantastic chance in tight, the Rochester power play went to work. At the 13:20 mark, Konsta Helenius broke the ice. The rookie sensation sniped a perfectly placed shot from the high slot, beating Marlies goaltender Artur Akhtyamov to give Rochester a 1-0 lead. Riley Fiddler-Schultz picked up the lone assist on the play.

Just over two minutes later, the Amerks doubled their advantage. At 15:58, Carson Meyer wired a beautiful wrist shot past Akhtyamov’s glove side, capping off a clean setup by Ryan Johnson and Anton Wahlberg.

Levi ensured the 2-0 lead held going into the intermission by robbing a Toronto breakaway late in the opening period. Rochester narrowly outshot Toronto 10-8 in the first period.
Levi Shuts the Door
The middle period saw no scoring, but it wasn’t without tension. Toronto pushed back hard, outshooting the Amerks 9-7 in the second period, but Rochester’s workhorse goaltender simply would not be cracked. Levi swallowed up rebounds and controlled the pace, preserving the two-goal cushion heading into the final 20 minutes.
Rochester finally added some critical insurance early in the third period. At 8:19, defenseman Vsevolod Komarov hammered a heavy shot from the point that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net, extending the lead to 3-0. Helenius and Douglas grabbed the helpers on the decisive strike.

Desperate to save their series lead, the Marlies pulled Akhtyamov for an extra attacker with 2:45 remaining and called a timeout a minute later to draw up a plan. However, the Amerks’ defense held firm. Ryan Johnson officially iced the game with an empty-net goal at 18:54, courtesy of Wahlberg’s second assist of the night.
Postgame Notes & Stats
While Toronto ultimately outshot Rochester 29-24, the Amerks decisively won the special teams battle. Rochester went 1-for-2 on the power play while their penalty kill was flawless, shutting down all three Marlies advantages.
The season now comes down to Sunday, April 26. Game 3 will take place at Coca-Cola Coliseum in Toronto, with puck drop set for 4:00 PM.
