The Rochester Americans needed just one point to secure a playoff berth. However, the hockey gods had different plans on Friday night. Instead of a celebration, the Amerks suffered a devastating 2-1 defeat against the Cleveland Monsters. For most of the night, goaltender Devon Levi played brilliantly to keep the game incredibly close. Additionally, the offense pushed relentlessly and consistently outshot their opponent. Unfortunately, a late third-period strike by Cleveland suddenly silenced the roaring crowd at Blue Cross Arena. Consequently, Rochester must pack their bags and try to officially punch their ticket on the road tomorrow.

First Period: Levi Shines Early in Scoreless Start

The opening frame at Blue Cross Arena set the tone for a tight, playoff-style battle. Both Cleveland’s Zach Sawchenko and Rochester’s Devon Levi traded early stops. First, the Amerks lost the opening faceoff. Then, they found themselves on their heels early. Referees sent Jagger Joshua to the box for hooking just 3:01 into the contest. However, Levi quickly proved he was dialed in for this crucial matchup. He made a massive save to anchor the penalty kill. Because of this, Rochester shifted the momentum back to even strength.

Meanwhile, Rochester’s most dangerous look came midway through the frame. Konsta Helenius threaded a beautiful pass to spring Anton Wahlberg on a breakaway. Unfortunately, Sawchenko managed to shut the door. Late in the period, a slashing call on Cleveland’s Zach Aston-Reese gave the Amerks a golden opportunity. Still, the power-play unit could not find the back of the net. Ultimately, both squads headed into the first intermission locked in a scoreless tie.

Second Period: Monsters Take Lead Despite Rochester Pressure

The action heated up quickly in the middle frame. Early on, officials awarded Anton Wahlberg a penalty shot. He skated in with a massive chance to break the tie. However, Zach Sawchenko made a sharp blocker save to keep the game scoreless. Shortly after, Cleveland capitalized on a loose puck. At the 6:35 mark, Brendan Gaunce found a juicy rebound and buried it into an open net. Zach Aston-Reese and Dysin Mayo picked up the assists on the scoring sequence. Consequently, this goal gave the Monsters a 1-0 advantage.

Following the goal, Rochester pushed hard for an equalizer. Matteo Costantini earned a clean breakaway opportunity later in the period. He attempted to quickly slip the puck through the five-hole. Once again, Sawchenko stood tall and denied the forward. Despite trailing on the scoreboard, the Amerks carried the play offensively. They ultimately outshot the Monsters by a 12-11 margin during the second period. Still, Cleveland carried their narrow 1-0 lead into the second intermission.

Third Period: Heartbreak Strikes Late in 2-1 Defeat

The Rochester Americans entered the final frame desperate for a spark. First, Devon Levi kept their hopes alive. He delivered a clutch breakaway save against Brendan Gaunce early in the period. Soon after, the Amerks finally found their offensive breakthrough. Cleveland’s Jack Williams took a tripping penalty at the 4:31 mark. Consequently, Rochester headed to a crucial power play. Just over a minute later, Olivier Nadeau tied the game. He expertly deflected a point shot from Gavin Bayreuther past the goaltender. Anton Wahlberg also picked up a secondary assist on the thrilling equalizer.

Following the goal, Rochester quickly killed a roughing minor from Carson Meyer. Then, defenseman Jack Rathbone energized the home crowd. He rushed end-to-end but could not finish the spectacular sequence. Unfortunately, disaster struck the Amerks at the 14:59 mark. Jack Williams redeemed his earlier penalty with a gorgeous toe-drag and snipe. This late goal gave Cleveland a devastating 2-1 advantage. Furthermore, the Monsters nearly extended their lead but squarely hit the goal post moments later. Ultimately, coach Mike Leone pulled Levi with two minutes remaining. He even used his timeout at 1:37 to scheme up a final push. However, the Amerks simply could not find another equalizer despite outshooting Cleveland 13-11 in the period. In the end, the Monsters escaped with a tight 2-1 victory.

Final Thoughts: Sawchenko Steals the Show as Amerks Hand Out Year-End Hardware

Despite the heartbreaking loss, the underlying numbers show Rochester largely controlled the pace. The Amerks outshot the Monsters by a final tally of 33-30. Furthermore, the penalty kill was completely flawless, blanking Cleveland on their two man-advantage opportunities. Conversely, Rochester converted on one of their two power-play chances. Forward Anton Wahlberg paced the home squad offensively by firing a team-high five shots on goal. In the crease, Devon Levi turned in a very respectable 28-save performance. Ultimately, Cleveland goaltender Zach Sawchenko rightfully earned First Star honors for his 32-save masterclass. Jack Williams took the Second Star for his game-winning heroics, while Olivier Nadeau claimed the Third Star for his third-period tally.

Before the puck dropped, the organization celebrated its 2025-26 year-end awards in front of the passionate home crowd. Star defenseman Zac Jones earned the prestigious Most Valuable Player honor as voted by his teammates. Meanwhile, teenage phenom Konsta Helenius officially secured the Scoring Champion title and shared the Game-Winning Goals award with Trevor Kuntar. Nadeau’s Third Star performance perfectly capped off a night where he was named both Rookie of the Year and Most Improved Player. Additionally, the gritty Jagger Joshua took home the Rob Zabelny Unsung Hero and Most Popular Player awards. Finally, Riley Fiddler-Schultz was recognized for his outstanding character, winning both the Fairand/O’Neil Sportsmanship Award and the McCulloch Trophy for his dedicated community service.
