ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Despite a historic milestone from defenseman Zac Jones and a late-game push, the Rochester Americans couldn’t overcome a second-period defensive lapse, falling 5-3 to the Syracuse Crunch on Friday night. The loss extends Rochester’s recent struggles against their North Division rivals, having dropped three straight to the Crunch.
Jones Makes History Early
The night began with a spark of brilliance from the Amerks’ blue line. Zac Jones opened the scoring in the first period, weaving through the Syracuse defense to tuck a highlight-reel finish through the five-hole of Brandon Halverson.
The goal was more than just a lead-taker; it pushed Jones past the 50-point threshold. He is the first Rochester defenseman to reach that mark since Michael Kostka in the 2010-11 season. Jones continues to lead all AHL defensemen in scoring with 51 points, serving as the engine of the Rochester offense.
Second Period Spiral
The momentum shifted violently in the middle frame. After taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, Rochester found itself in penalty trouble early in the second. Syracuse capitalized on back-to-back power plays, led by Conor Geekie and Mitchell Chaffee, to ignite a run of five unanswered goals.
The Crunch’s clinical execution on the man advantage—and an even-strength tally from Nick Abruzzese—turned a tight contest into a 5-1 deficit by the early stages of the third period.
Fighting to the Finish
Rochester refused to fold in the final frame. Jagger Joshua, who had already dropped the gloves for a first-period scrap, helped kickstart the comeback attempt. Joshua pressured a turnover that allowed Riley Fiddler-Schultz to bat a puck down and roof his team-leading 19th goal of the year.
The Amerks’ power play finally broke through late in the game when Carson Meyer hammered home a one-timer from the left dot. It was Meyer’s 12th of the campaign and his first in eight games, cutting the lead to 5-3.
Rookie goaltender Scott Ratzlaff made 16 saves on the night, seeing significantly less rubber than in his previous three starts where he eclipsed the 30-save mark in each. Rochester pulled Ratzlaff for the extra attacker in the dying minutes, but Halverson and the Syracuse defense held firm to clinch a playoff berth for the Crunch.
