The Buffalo Sabres continued their historic run on the road Saturday night, overcoming an early deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Kings 4–1 at Crypto.com Arena. With the win, Buffalo extended its franchise-record road point streak to 13 games (12–0–1)—matching the longest such streak in the NHL this season—and moved into a tie with the Carolina Hurricanes for the top spot in the Eastern Conference with 94 points. Sam Carrick proved to be the difference-maker yet again, breaking a third-period deadlock to record his fifth goal in just eight games since joining the club at the trade deadline. The victory marks Buffalo’s 12th win in 13 games since the Olympic break, fueled by a defense that has surrendered only three goals over the last four contests.
Sabres Control Pace but Trail Kings After Opening Frame
The Buffalo Sabres put together a strong opening frame at Crypto.com Arena, outshooting the Los Angeles Kings 13–8 and dictating much of the 5-on-5 play. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was sharp from the jump, denying a high-danger chance just seconds after puck drop to keep the game scoreless early. While the Kings managed to strike first on a power-play goal from Artemi Panarin following a Jack Quinn hooking minor, Buffalo followed the LA goal with a dominant shift and maintained a late-period surge, consistently testing the Kings’ defense. Owen Power led the Sabres in shots with three as the team headed into the room down 1–0 despite the shot advantage.
Thompson Highlights Tight Second Period in Los Angeles
The Sabres found their equalizer early in the second period as Tage Thompson showcased his elite skill, tying the game at 1–1 just 4:05 into the period. Thompson’s 36th of the season was a highlight-reel effort set up by Peyton Krebs and Mattias Samuelsson. Buffalo’s discipline was tested later in the period, but the penalty kill stood tall to negate a Samuelsson tripping minor midway through the period. However, the Kings pushed back with a heavy shot volume, outshooting the Sabres 13–7 in the frame to pull in the lead in shot totals 21-20. Los Angeles will head into the final 20 minutes with five seconds of power-play time remaining following a late Zach Metsa tripping call.
Sabres Pull Away Late to Secure Gritty Road Win in LA
The final period began with a successful penalty kill for Buffalo, as the Sabres erased the final seconds of Zach Metsa’s minor before turning up the pressure. Peyton Krebs had a few prime opportunities early but couldn’t find the back of the net, keeping the tension high until midway through the period. The deadlock finally broke at the 11:12 mark when Zach Benson took a hard hit but still managed to feed Sam Carrick, who took the puck hard to the net to put Buffalo up 2–1. The Kings challenged the play for a missed game stoppage due to a high stick, but the call on the ice stood. The failed challenge handed the Sabres their first power play of the night, and they made it count just a minute later. Rasmus Dahlin fired a wrist shot that bounced off bodies in front and in, pushing the lead to 3–1. LA pulled their goaltender with three minutes remaining, but Zach Benson iced the game with an empty-netter at 17:35 to secure the 4–1 victory.
Buffalo dominated the third period shot clock 13–6, finishing the game with a 33–27 edge in shots. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was the backbone of the win, turning aside 26 of 27 shots for a stellar .963 save percentage. The Sabres saw multi-point performances from Benson (1G, 1A), Tage Thompson (1G, 1A), and Josh Norris (2A), while Rasmus Dahlin logged a team-high 23:07 of ice time. Alex Tuch peppered the Kings’ net with four shots, and Beck Malenstyn provided the physical edge with three hits. There is no rest for the Sabres as they immediately head down the I-5 to face the Anaheim Ducks tomorrow, Sunday, March 22nd, at 8:00 PM EST to wrap up their West Coast road trip.
