Welcome back to SabresHub.com, Sabres fans. The day we have been waiting over a decade for might finally be here.
Tonight, the Buffalo Sabres roll into Capital One Arena to take on the Washington Capitals with destiny entirely in their own hands. After dominating the NHL for the last four months and racking up 100 points, the boys in blue and gold are no longer just hoping to make the playoffs—they are looking to make a deep run. But before the real season begins, they need to officially cross the finish line.
Here is everything you need to know ahead of tonight’s massive Eastern Conference showdown.
The Clinching Scenarios
Buffalo could secure a playoff berth this afternoon while they are still getting ready at the hotel. If the New York Rangers can defeat the Detroit Red Wings in regulation during their 12:30 p.m. matinee, the Sabres will officially be playoff-bound.
If Detroit manages to pull out a point or win, Buffalo simply needs to handle their own business. A victory over the Capitals tonight guarantees a playoff spot and pushes the Sabres to 102 points on the season, which would be the franchise’s highest point total since the 2006-07 campaign.
Finding Urgency After Ottawa
The Sabres are coming off a frustrating 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Ottawa Senators on Thursday. It was a gritty, grinding game where the neutral zone was completely locked down, scoring chances were rare, and the officials let a lot of physical play slide.
That loss served as a stark reminder that the team still has areas to tighten up. Defenseman Mattias Samuelsson, who provided Buffalo’s only offense in the game, noted afterward that postseason hockey looks exactly like the Ottawa game, and the team must learn to adapt and win in low-event, heavily contested environments.
Forward Jason Zucker echoed a similar sentiment, reminding everyone that the postseason isn’t guaranteed until there is an ‘x’ next to their name in the standings. He stressed that while the locker room remains calm and confident, the roster needs to turn up their urgency and fine-tune their execution. It is worth noting that Buffalo’s resilience has been elite all winter; the team has not dropped consecutive games in regulation since early December.
Goaltending and Roster Adjustments
Generating even-strength offense has been an unusual struggle lately, with Buffalo managing only three 5-on-5 goals over their last three contests. In response, head coach Lindy Ruff mixed up the forward combinations during Friday’s practice.
We will also likely see a change in the crease. Alex Lyon commanded his own net during Friday’s skates, indicating he will take the starting job tonight to give Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen a breather. Giving Lyon the nod on the road is an easy decision right now. Over his last 11 away games, the veteran netminder is an incredible 10-0-1, boasting a stellar .926 save percentage in hostile territory.
On the penalty kill, keep an eye on Zach Metsa. Since being recalled from Rochester, he has logged over three minutes of shorthanded ice time across two games and is earning the coaching staff’s trust.
Scouting the Capitals
Washington is desperate. Sitting just three points outside of the final wild-card spot, every single shift matters for them. Despite getting heavily outscored in a blowout loss to New Jersey on Thursday, the Capitals have been playing great hockey lately, posting a 7-3-2 record over their last twelve matchups. That recent stretch includes a tight 2-1 victory over the Sabres last month in Buffalo, where Jakob Chychrun broke a tie in the dying minutes of regulation.
The Capitals have also injected some youth into their lineup by calling up highly regarded defensive prospect Cole Hutson. The rookie is already averaging over 16 minutes a night and has racked up six points in just eight appearances.
Up front, the ageless wonder continues to score. Alex Ovechkin recently netted two goals to bring his season total to 31, marking the 20th time in his 21-year career that the 40-year-old has surpassed the 30-goal milestone. While his transition game isn’t what it used to be, he remains incredibly dangerous whenever the puck is on his stick.
Milestones and Historic Trends
Tonight features a heavy-hitting battle from the blue line. Both of these rosters generate massive offense from their defensemen. Buffalo’s back end has scored 53 goals this year, ranking second in the entire NHL, while Washington’s defense ranks third with 50 goals.
For the Sabres, Rasmus Dahlin will skate in his 582nd career game tonight, tying Jay McKee for the seventh-most games played by a defenseman in franchise history.
Up front, Tage Thompson will look to continue his historical dominance over Washington. He has completely torched the Capitals over the last few years, racking up 17 points in his last 15 games against them. Meanwhile, Alex Tuch comes into tonight riding a three-game goal streak against Washington.
Finally, if the Sabres can pull off the win tonight, it will mark the franchise’s 100th all-time victory over the Capitals.
