Amerks Blanked by Marlies in Weekend Split; Devon Levi Reaches Appearance Milestone

0

The Rochester Americans couldn’t find their offensive rhythm on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 to the Toronto Marlies at Coca-Cola Coliseum. The loss results in a weekend split for the North Division rivals, with both clubs successfully defending their home ice in the back-to-back set.

Despite the setback, the game marked a significant workload milestone for goaltender Devon Levi, who made his league-leading 42nd appearance of the season.

Game Summary: Offense Stalls in Toronto

The Marlies jumped out to an early lead just minutes after the opening faceoff. Following a scrap at center ice between Kaleb Lawrence and Landon Sim, Toronto’s Logan Shaw capitalized on a point shot from William Villeneuve that deflected into the net.

Rochester struggled to test Toronto’s Artur Akhtyamov early on, failing to register a shot on goal for nearly the first eight minutes of play. While the Amerks eventually found their legs and finished the opening frame with 10 shots, they headed into the first intermission trailing by one.

Defensive Battle and Costly Penalties

The middle period was defined by a steady parade to the penalty box. Both teams combined for several infractions, though neither power play unit could break through.

Rochester’s best opportunity to even the score came midway through the second. Kaleb Lawrence exited the penalty box and found himself on a clean breakaway, but Akhtyamov stood tall to preserve the shutout. With less than a minute remaining in the period, Marc Johnstone used an Amerks defender as a screen to beat Levi, doubling the Toronto lead to 2-0.

Final Push Falls Short

The third period saw both teams tighten up defensively, limiting high-danger chances. A late-game fight between Jagger Joshua and Cedric Pare injected some energy into the building, but the Amerks’ attempt at a 6-on-5 comeback was thwarted. Former Amerk Alexander Nylander sealed the result with an empty-net goal in the final minutes.

Key Performance Notes

  • Devon Levi’s Workload: Levi stopped 24 of 26 shots faced. While he has struggled to find the win column recently (0-6-2 in his last eight), his individual performance remains steady, having allowed three or fewer goals in half of those contests.
  • Blue Line Production: Defensemen Gavin Bayreuther and Ryan Johnson led the charge offensively, combining for 10 of the team’s 26 shots.
  • Special Teams Excellence: A bright spot for Rochester was the penalty kill, which went a perfect 6-for-6 against the Marlies’ man advantage.
  • Akhtyamov’s Shutout: Artur Akhtyamov earned the win with a 26-save performance, marking his first AHL shutout since the previous season.
