Sabres Drop Game 5 to Canadiens, Face Elimination

0

The Buffalo Sabres are officially on the brink. Despite jumping out to three separate leads on Thursday night, Buffalo surrendered six goals to the Montreal Canadiens, falling 6-3 at KeyBank Center.

Consequently, Montreal now holds a 3-2 series advantage. The Canadiens can punch their ticket to the Eastern Conference Final with a victory on Saturday, leaving the Sabres facing elimination for the first time this postseason.

A Wild Opening Period

The first twenty minutes featured a relentless, back-and-forth pace with five combined goals. Buffalo struck first when Jack Quinn’s shot deflected off Jason Zucker and past Montreal goaltender Jakub Dobes.

Montreal responded shortly after as Cole Caufield capitalized on a defensive zone turnover to tie the game. The chaos continued just minutes later. Josh Doan ripped a one-timer to restore the Buffalo lead, officially extending his impressive playoff point streak to six consecutive games.

However, the celebration was incredibly short-lived. Alexandre Texier evened the score a mere nine seconds later. Late in the first period, rookie Konsta Helenius thrilled the home crowd by threading a wrist shot through the five-hole for his first career playoff goal, giving Buffalo a 3-2 advantage.

The Second Period Collapse

Buffalo held that narrow lead heading into the second period, but the momentum shifted drastically. Josh Anderson tied the game by finishing a slick backdoor pass from Lane Hutson.

Later in the period, Jake Evans managed to poke a loose puck past Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to give Montreal their first lead of the night. Shortly after that, Nick Suzuki blasted a power-play strike to make it 5-3. Montreal scored those three critical goals within a pivotal ten-minute stretch, completely deflating the KeyBank Center crowd.

Goaltending and Special Teams

Luukkonen’s night ended early after allowing five goals on 23 shots through two periods. Alex Lyon took over the crease for the final twenty minutes, but the goaltending switch did little to spark a Buffalo comeback. Ivan Demidov added another power-play tally for Montreal early in the third, effectively sealing the victory.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the ice, Dobes stood tall. The Canadiens netminder turned aside 32 of the 36 shots he faced. His most crucial moment came early in the second period, making a massive breakaway stop on Tage Thompson to keep the game within reach for Montreal.

Special teams proved to be a massive deciding factor. Buffalo failed to convert on their two power-play opportunities while the Canadiens were a perfect two-for-two on the man advantage. Furthermore, Montreal blocked 25 shots compared to Buffalo’s 11, constantly frustrating the home team’s offensive pushes.

Looking Ahead to Game 6

The Sabres will now pack their bags for a do-or-die Game 6 at the Bell Centre. Buffalo must find a way to tighten up defensively and play a full sixty minutes to keep their Stanley Cup hopes alive.
