Amerks Corner

Amerks vs Marlies Game 2 Preview: Do-or-Die at Blue Cross

0

The Rochester Americans are putting their season on the line once again. After needing a crucial point on the final day of the regular season to extend their year, the Amerks are backed into a corner tonight. They look to stave off elimination in Game 2 of their first-round North Division series with the Toronto Marlies.

This marks the second time in just five days that Rochester is forced into a situation where its season could come to a close. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05 PM at The Blue Cross Arena.

Shaking Off Game 1

Toronto controlled the series opener from start to finish, handing Rochester a 5-0 loss at Coca-Cola Coliseum on Wednesday to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. Veteran forward Vinni Lettieri led all players with a natural hat trick and a four-point performance.

Meanwhile, Toronto netminder Artur Akhtyamov stopped all 16 shots he faced to earn his first playoff shutout. It was also his second consecutive shutout against Rochester after denying 26 shots against the Amerks back on March 14. For the Amerks, Devon Levi turned aside 27 shots in the loss.

The 5-0 defeat was the second straight playoff game in which the Amerks were shut out, dating back to Game 5 of the North Division Finals against Laval last May. Furthermore, the 16 shots registered matched a franchise low for a playoff game, tying Game 2 of the 1993 Calder Cup Finals against the Cape Breton Oilers.

The Blueprint to Bounce Back

Fortunately, Rochester has a history of responding to adversity. Just last weekend, the team suffered a demoralizing 8-0 defeat in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, only to bounce back less than 24 hours later with an effort against Hershey that punched their playoff ticket.

Returning to Rochester is also a massive advantage. The two teams split their six-game regular-season series, with each club winning all three of its home games. During last year’s Calder Cup Playoff run, Rochester went a dominant 3-1 on home ice.

If Rochester wants to force a decisive Game 3, they will need their top performers to step up:

  • Zac Jones: The dynamic blueliner recently won the Eddie Shore Award as the AHL’s outstanding defenseman for the 2025-26 season. He paced all league defensemen with 62 points and 52 assists.
  • Konsta Helenius: The rookie forward drove the offense with a team-high 63 points. He produced the best single-season by an Amerks teenager in franchise history.
  • Devon Levi: Levi finished the year as an absolute workhorse, becoming the first Amerks goaltender since Linus Ullmark to appear in 50 games during a season.
  • Special Teams: The Amerks enter the postseason with the top-ranked power-play unit in the Eastern Conference at 23.3%. Converting on the man-advantage will be crucial to cracking Akhtyamov.

History of Resilience

This is the fifth ever playoff series between the Amerks and Marlies, with the previous four ending in sweeps (though they were each in a best-of-five format). Toronto’s last sweep over the Amerks came in the opening round of the 2019 playoffs. However, the last playoff game played between these two teams at Blue Cross Arena resulted in an 8-4 Rochester win to end the 2023 North Division Finals.

While Toronto looks formidable, they have a glaring weakness to exploit. The Marlies have not won on the road in the postseason since May 5, 2023, going 2-7 in their last nine away games.

When pushed to the brink, these Amerks simply do not quit. Rochester is 6-3 in its last nine games when facing elimination since the start of the 2023 Calder Cup Playoffs. They rallied from a 2-0 hole against Syracuse in 2023, mounted a stunning three-goal third-period comeback against Syracuse in 2024, and saw Josh Dunne put on a clinic to save the season against Laval last spring.
