Bruins Drop Sabres in Game 2: UPL Pulled in 4-2 Loss

The energy inside KeyBank Center was absolutely electric at puck drop. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen was pounding the pre-game drum, slamming a beer, and whipping the home crowd into an absolute frenzy.

Unfortunately for the Buffalo Sabres, that pre-game electricity simply did not translate into a full 60 minutes of playoff hockey.

Despite a late third-period surge, the Sabres dropped Game 2 by a final score of 4-2. The Bruins chased starting goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen from the crease early in the third period, reclaiming home-ice advantage as the series heads back to Massachusetts tied at one game apiece.

Strong Start Erased by Struggles at the Dot

Buffalo came out firing against Bruins netminder Jeremy Swayman. The Sabres heavily dictated the early pace, outshooting Boston 6-1 in the opening four minutes.

Luukkonen also stood tall early. The Sabres’ goaltender turned away two early Boston breakaways, bringing his total to a perfect four-for-four on breakaway stops across the first two games of this series.

However, a glaring issue emerged immediately: the faceoff dot. Boston dominated puck possession by winning an astonishing 90% of the first-period draws (18-for-20). That inability to secure clean possession eventually caught up to Buffalo’s defense.

A Disastrous Second Period

The ice tilted entirely in the second period as Boston found their offensive rhythm. Viktor Arvidsson opened the scoring at the 4:53 mark, slipping a quick backhand past UPL.

Then came the back-breaking fluke.

At 16:29, Boston’s Morgan Geekie simply dumped the puck in from center ice. Inexplicably, the puck took a wild, unpredictable bounce and found its way past Luukkonen into the net, doubling the Bruins’ lead to 2-0.

Boston twisted the knife just before intermission. Capitalizing on Buffalo’s ongoing special teams struggles, Pavel Zacha tipped home a powerplay redirect at 18:10 to make it a commanding 3-0 game.

Bruins Chase Luukkonen Early in the Third

Luukkonen’s night came to an abrupt end just 16 seconds into the third period. Boston’s Viktor Arvidsson capitalized on a 2-on-1 rush, sniping his second goal of the game to finally chase the Sabres’ netminder.

UPL finished a frustrating outing with only 15 saves on 19 shots. Head coach Lindy Ruff opted for a change, sending Alex Lyon in to stop the bleeding.

Late Sabres Push Falls Short

Facing a 4-0 deficit in the third period, Buffalo attempted to mount another late comeback.

Bowen Byram finally broke Swayman’s shutout bid, sparking the crowd with a beautiful glove-side snipe at 13:52. Just over a minute later, with Lyon pulled for the extra attacker, Peyton Krebs found a loose rebound and buried it to cut the Boston lead in half.

However, the late push ultimately fell short. The Bruins locked down the neutral zone in the final minutes, securing the 4-2 victory.

What’s Next for Buffalo?

The Sabres have a day to review the tape and regroup before heading into hostile territory. Game 3 is set for this Thursday, April 23rd, at 7:00 PM inside TD Garden.
