One Last Stand: Amerks Face Do-or-Die Finale in Hershey

0

The script for the 70th season in Rochester Americans history has come down to the final page. After months of grinding through the AHL schedule, the Amerks enter game 72 on Sunday afternoon with their entire postseason fate hanging in the balance. The mission is simple but daunting: earn at least one point against the Hershey Bears, or the summer starts tomorrow.

The Playoff Picture

The pressure intensified Saturday night following a difficult road trip to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. Despite keeping pace in shots early on, the Amerks suffered a stinging 8-0 loss to the Penguins. The shutout was Rochester’s fourth of the year—all of which have occurred away from home—and saw both Scott Ratzlaff and Topias Leinonen struggle in the crease.

While Rochester stumbled, the Utica Comets surged, sweeping the Providence Bruins to pull even in the standings. Because Utica holds the tiebreaker, the Amerks find themselves on the outside looking in as they wake up Sunday morning. To reclaim their spot, Rochester must secure a win, an overtime loss, or a shootout loss. Anything less, and the rival Comets take the final seat at the table.

Turning to the Workhorse

With the season on the line, head coach Mike Leone is calling on his most reliable asset. Devon Levi is set to make his 52nd start of the campaign, the heaviest workload for an Amerks netminder in nearly a decade. Levi is no stranger to high-stakes hockey, having carried the load in winner-take-all playoff games over the last two springs.

The 24-year-old has been the backbone of the roster this year, and his previous experience in Hershey provides a glimmer of hope; back in early 2024, he turned aside 37 shots to help the team secure a point in a tight overtime battle at the Giant Center.

Offensive Reinforcements

In a timely boost for the lineup, leading goal-scorer Riley Fiddler-Schultz is expected to make his return. Sidelined by injury since late March, Fiddler-Schultz has been sorely missed during the team’s current four-game winless drought. Before his injury, he was enjoying a breakout season with 21 goals, including several key tallies against top-tier Atlantic Division opponents. His ability to find the back of the net on the road will be vital for a Rochester offense that went cold on Saturday.

Scouting the Bears

While Hershey has already punched its playoff ticket, they are far from coasting. The Bears are fighting to avoid a first-round matchup against Charlotte, the team that ended their championship hopes last year. A win for Hershey moves them up the seeding ladder and secures a more favorable path through the opening round.

However, the “Sweetest Place on Earth” has been sour for the home team lately. Hershey is currently mired in a five-game home losing streak, struggling to keep pucks out of their own net. If they fall again on Sunday, it would statistically mark the worst home-ice season in the storied 88-year history of the franchise.

Overcoming the Keystone State Curse

History suggests a tough climb for the visitors. Rochester has historically struggled on Pennsylvania ice, managing only a single victory in their last 12 trips to the state. But with the 70th anniversary season on the line and a playoff berth just one point away, the Amerks have every reason to break the trend and extend their year into the postseason.
