Rochester Americans Poised to Clinch Playoff Berth Against Surging Thunderbirds

The Rochester Americans are heading into the weekend with a massive opportunity right in front of them. Through all the adversity they have faced this year, the Amerks are officially on the brink of locking down a postseason berth. They continue their current road trip with a Friday night clash against the Springfield Thunderbirds at the MassMutual Center. Puck drop is slated for 7:00 PM, and fans can follow the action live on 95.7 FM WGR or stream it through AHLTV.

Riding a Wave of Momentum

Rochester brings plenty of confidence into Massachusetts after a thrilling come-from-behind victory on Wednesday night. Despite giving up the opening goal to Syracuse, the Amerks rallied back to secure a tight 3-2 win. The difference-maker came off the stick of rookie Chris Douglas, who buried his first professional goal midway through the final frame to seal the victory.

Furthermore, Olivier Nadeau turned heads by registering his first career two-goal performance in the AHL. Between the pipes, Devon Levi was highly effective, stopping 17 shots to claim his third consecutive victory. Levi has been a steadying presence in the crease, winning six of his last eight starts while maintaining a solid .905 save percentage on the year. Rochester is now riding a three-game win streak, their longest successful stretch since mid-February. Interestingly enough, that previous streak was kickstarted by a dominant four-goal shutout over tonight’s opponent, the Thunderbirds.

Breaking Down the Clinching Scenarios

The math is incredibly simple for Rochester at this stage of the season. Their magic number currently sits at just three points. This means the Amerks can punch their ticket to the Calder Cup Playoffs on Friday night if they can defeat Springfield and the Utica Comets suffer any type of loss against the Toronto Marlies.

Alternatively, if Rochester manages to force overtime or a shootout against the Thunderbirds, they will still clinch if Utica loses their matchup in regulation. Securing a playoff spot tonight would be a fitting callback to last season, as the Amerks also secured their postseason fate during an early April victory against Springfield. Doing so would mark Rochester’s fifth straight trip to the playoffs, a milestone the franchise has not reached since their impressive eleven-year postseason streak ended in 2001.

Looking Up the North Division Standings

During a difficult stretch earlier this spring, simply holding onto the fifth and final playoff spot in the North Division felt like the absolute best-case scenario. However, the Amerks currently boast an eight-point lead over Utica with only five games left on the schedule.

Because of their recent surge, Rochester is now within striking distance of the fourth-place Marlies. The Amerks trail Toronto by only five points and still hold a game in hand. Catching Toronto would be monumental, as it would grant Rochester home-ice advantage for the opening best-of-three play-in round. While technically still mathematically possible to catch the third-place Cleveland Monsters and skip the play-in round entirely, the margin for error is razor-thin. Cleveland currently sits seven points ahead of Rochester and holds the crucial tiebreaker advantage.

Special Teams Operating at an Elite Level

A massive key to Rochester’s success has been their lethal execution on the man-advantage. The Amerks have successfully found the back of the net on the power play in seven of their last eight outings. Despite dealing with a revolving door of call-ups and injuries, Rochester still owns the fourth-best power-play percentage in the entire AHL.

When playing away from home, that unit becomes even more dangerous. The Amerks boast a league-best 26.5 percent success rate on the road power play. Production is coming from everywhere, with fifteen different players recording a power-play tally this season. Konsta Helenius is pacing the group with eight goals while up a man, contributing to his team-leading 60 overall points. Additionally, defenseman Zac Jones continues to be an offensive catalyst, leading all league blueliners with 59 points, an incredible 34 of those coming via power-play assists.

Scouting the Surging Thunderbirds

Earning those clinching points tonight will not be an easy task. Since being shut out by Rochester back in February, the Thunderbirds have completely transformed their season. Springfield has compiled a stellar thirteen wins over their last twenty-one games.

The St. Louis affiliate has found a new identity down the stretch, largely sparked by former Buffalo Sabre Steve Ott taking over interim head coaching duties. After shipping out their captain at the trade deadline, veteran Chris Wagner took over the leadership role and is currently having a phenomenal year, leading the squad with 23 goals and 44 overall points.

Springfield enters Friday riding a four-game win streak, having scored at least four goals in every single victory during that span. Goaltender Vadim Zherenko has also been excellent, allowing three or fewer goals in his last nine starts to complement his .904 save percentage. Just like the Amerks, the Thunderbirds are battling hard for a playoff spot, entering the weekend with a magic number of six to secure their own postseason dreams.
