Tonight’s Buffalo Sabres vs New York Rangers game at Madison Square Garden was an absolute rollercoaster of emotions. Initially, our boys struggled with brutal defensive zone turnovers. Furthermore, special teams blunders allowed New York to steal a 3-2 lead in the second period. However, the team completely flipped the script in the final twenty minutes. Ultimately, a dominant third-period effort, highlighted by two rapid-fire goals and absolute shutdown defense, allowed Buffalo to escape with a massive 5-3 victory. Let’s break down exactly how this wild matchup unfolded!
First Period of Buffalo Sabres vs New York Rangers: Our Boys Grab a 2-1 Lead
The Buffalo Sabres vs New York Rangers matchup at Madison Square Garden kicked off with an early advantage for our boys. However, it certainly wasn’t a perfect opening twenty minutes.
Right out of the gate, Buffalo struggled with careless puck management. In fact, they turned the puck over twice deep in our own zone. Thankfully, our brick wall, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (UPL), was completely dialed in. UPL made massive saves early on to rescue his D-corps.
Despite the early jitters, Buffalo struck first at the 4:40 mark. Jason Zucker threaded a beautiful pass to Ryan McLeod. Consequently, McLeod sniped it far post to put the Sabres up 1-0. Conor Timmins picked up the secondary apple on the play.
Meanwhile, D-zone turnovers continued to be a glaring issue. UPL repeatedly stood tall in the crease to keep New York off the board. As a result of his hard work, the Sabres’ offense rewarded him at 8:58. Rasmus Dahlin fired a point shot that perfectly deflected off Zach Benson and into the net. Furthermore, Bowen Byram grabbed an assist, doubling the Buffalo lead to 2-0.
However, playing with fire eventually burned Buffalo. Late in the frame, McLeod took a penalty for tripping Adam Sykora. This mistake sent the Rangers’ lethal power play onto the ice. Ultimately, New York capitalized at 19:21 when Alexis Lafrenière tipped an Adam Fox shot past Luukkonen. This late power-play tally cut the Sabres’ lead to 2-1 heading into the intermission.
Moving into the second period, Buffalo still had the lead. Yet, they desperately needed to clean up the breakouts to secure this game.
Second Period: Rangers Surge Ahead 3-2 in Frustrating Special Teams Stumble
The middle frame was a really tough watch for us Sabres fans. Special teams struggles and another brutal turnover allowed the New York Rangers to steal a 3-2 lead.
First, Buffalo received an early gift just 23 seconds into the period. Adam Fox tripped Tage Thompson, giving us a man advantage. However, the Sabres’ power play could not convert.
From there, things quickly went downhill. At the 2:57 mark, a costly giveaway by Josh Doan gave Alexis Lafrenière a wide-open breakaway. Assisted by Drew Fortescue, Lafrenière fired a perfect shot far side to tie the game at 2-2.
Subsequently, the Sabres’ penalty troubles came back to bite them. At 14:14, Peyton Krebs hooked Tye Kartye. This call put a very dangerous Rangers PP unit back to work. It took exactly 30 seconds for New York to make us pay. Adam Fox blasted a point shot through traffic, with helpers from Vincent Trocheck and Mika Zibanejad. As a result, the Rangers took their first lead of the night.
Late in the period, the hockey gods gave Buffalo a massive opportunity to equalize. First, Vincent Trocheck slashed Bowen Byram. A minute later, Vladislav Gavrikov cross-checked Jason Zucker. Therefore, this gave the Sabres a 5-on-3 advantage for almost a full minute.
Buffalo wisely used their timeout to rest the top unit and draw up a play. Shockingly, the man advantage completely stalled, and they generated nothing. To make matters worse, the Sabres actually surrendered a shorthanded 2-on-1 rush while still on the 5-on-4! Luckily, Luukkonen made a heart-stopping save just to keep the game close.
Third Period: Sabres Dominate to Secure Thrilling 5-3 Victory
Our Sabres came out absolutely flying in the third period. First, they finally tied the game at 3-3. At the 5:45 mark, Peyton Krebs hammered a shot from the point. Thankfully, Alex Tuch established net-front presence to perfectly tip the puck past the goalie. Tage Thompson also helped set up the equalizer.
Shortly after, the Buffalo bench completely erupted! Just one minute and 23 seconds later, Jason Zucker found a loose puck in the blue paint. Consequently, he banged home the garbage goal to give Buffalo a huge 4-3 lead. Ryan McLeod and Bowen Byram both earned assists on that incredibly gritty shift.
Next, the Sabres got a chance to extend their lead. At 10:00, New York’s Will Borgen took a holding the stick penalty against Beck Malenstyn. This call gave Buffalo another power play. However, Josh Norris took a hooking penalty of his own shortly after. Therefore, both teams skated 4-on-4 for over a minute. After that, the Rangers had an abbreviated power play. Fortunately, our penalty killers stood strong and slammed the door.
Finally, with just 1:30 left on the clock, the Rangers pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. However, Zach Benson completely ruined their comeback hopes! He buried his second goal of the night into the empty net at 18:44, thanks to an unselfish feed from Josh Doan.
New York desperately pulled their goalie again, but it was useless. Buffalo locked down the massive 5-3 win. Amazingly, our Sabres played absolute shutdown hockey to close out the game. In fact, they only allowed a single shot on goal the entire third period, outshooting the Rangers 8-1 in the final frame!
Final Thoughts: Sabres Take Control of the Atlantic Division
To wrap up this epic Buffalo Sabres vs New York Rangers game, let’s dive into the final numbers and player performances. First, Jason Zucker took home the First Star of the game with a gritty one-goal, one-assist effort. He also led the team with four shots on net. Second Star honors went to Ryan McLeod, who matched Zucker with two points of his own. Meanwhile, Alexis Lafrenière earned the Third Star for New York after netting two goals. We also have to give a massive shoutout to Zach Benson for burying two absolutely clutch goals!
Statistically, this game was a wild ride. Ultimately, the Sabres outshot the Rangers 27-20. However, special teams were a complete disaster for our boys. Buffalo went an abysmal 0-for-4 on the power play, while New York converted on 2 of their 3 chances. Furthermore, the Sabres struggled with puck control all night, committing 17 giveaways compared to the Rangers’ 12.
New York also dominated the faceoff dot, winning 55.8% of the draws, and they out-hit Buffalo 26-19. Nevertheless, our defense sacrificed the body when it mattered most, racking up 20 blocked shots to New York’s 11. Beck Malenstyn led the physical charge with five heavy hits. In net, UPL wasn’t his sharpest on paper, making 17 saves for an .850 save percentage with three goals against. Still, he made the crucial, game-saving stops when we needed them down the stretch.
Most importantly, this victory means everything for the playoff race. The Sabres now have 104 points on the season! Consequently, they sit two points ahead of both Tampa Bay and Montreal for the undisputed lead in the Atlantic Division. However, keep in mind that Buffalo has one fewer game remaining than those division rivals, so the margin for error is razor-thin.
There is zero time to rest, as the team is right back at it tomorrow night. The Sabres return home to KeyBank Center on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. to host the Columbus Blue Jackets. Be sure to tune into MSG at 6:30 for all the pregame coverage. Let’s keep this incredible momentum rolling!
