Way back in October, this magical Buffalo Sabres season kicked off against the New York Rangers at KeyBank Center. It ended in a disappointing four-goal shutout loss.
It is incredibly easy to forget that opening night stumble given the drastically different trajectories these two franchises have taken since. While the Rangers, a perennial playoff fixture over the last few years, were mathematically eliminated from contention last month, our Sabres are currently battling for the Atlantic Division title with just four games left on the schedule.
Buffalo received a massive favor on Tuesday night when the Tampa Bay Lightning dropped their game to Columbus. However, Montreal secured a victory, creating an absolute logjam at the top of the standings. Heading into tonight, the Sabres, Lightning, and Canadiens are all deadlocked at 102 points, and all three squads have exactly four games remaining. Incidentally, those 102 points represent Buffalo’s highest single-season total since the record-breaking 2006-07 campaign.
These final matchups will determine everything from home-ice advantage to our first-round opponent, which could end up being Tampa, Montreal, or a wild-card team. The pursuit of the division crown continues tonight in Manhattan.

This matchup also marks the first half of Buffalo’s thirteenth and final back-to-back set of the 2025-26 season. The team has handled the front half of these situations fairly well so far, boasting a 7-5-0 record in the first game of consecutive matchups.
Lineup Adjustments and Injury Updates
Expect to see a few fresh faces stepping onto the ice tonight. Tanner Pearson is slated to draw into the forward group, taking the place of Jordan Greenway. After missing over two months with a middle-body injury, Greenway has played four consecutive games. The coaching staff has indicated that he is completely healthy, but with another game looming tomorrow night back in Buffalo, they are opting to give him some rest and evaluate other players down the stretch.
On the blue line, Michael Kesselring is set to see his first game action since early March. Early-season injuries and a crowded defensive rotation following the trade deadline acquisitions of Logan Stanley and Luke Schenn have limited Kesselring to just 32 appearances this year. He skated alongside Conor Timmins during the morning session. The coaching staff has emphasized the importance of having nine capable defensemen ready for the postseason grind, noting that everyone will get a chance to prove themselves and that preparation is key to capitalizing on these late-season opportunities.
On the injury front, Buffalo is still without Sam Carrick and Noah Ostlund, who are dealing with upper-body injuries, while Justin Danforth and Jiri Kulich remain on injured reserve.
Between the Pipes
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is the expected starter in the crease tonight, and for good reason. He has historically dominated the Rangers, boasting a sparkling .929 save percentage and a 2.13 goals-against average over eight career matchups against New York.
At the other end of the rink, tonight is the final home game of the season for the Rangers. Fans should anticipate seeing their premier netminder, Igor Shesterkin, taking the crease for the MSG finale. He carries a .912 save percentage across 49 appearances this year.
Sabres to Watch: Milestones and Momentum
Buffalo enters tonight as the hottest team in hockey. They have secured at least one point in 24 of their last 30 matchups. Since the Olympic break, nobody has been better; Buffalo leads the league with 15 wins and 32 points in that span. If you zoom out even further to December 9th, they rank first overall in the NHL with 36 victories and 76 points.
Several individual players are riding massive waves of momentum into MSG:
- Tage Thompson: He has racked up 55 points in his last 48 games. His 211 career goals as a Sabre have tied him with the legendary Alexander Mogilny for 12th on the franchise’s all-time scoring list. He only needs seven more tallies to leapfrog Jason Pominville for sole possession of 10th place. Thompson also loves playing the Rangers, notching six points in his last five games against them.
- Rasmus Dahlin: Tonight is a milestone evening for the elite defenseman. He will skate in his 584th career game, tying Jim Schoenfeld for the sixth-most appearances by a blueliner in Sabres history. Dahlin has been an offensive force against New York, carrying a four-game road point streak into MSG and tallying 13 points in his last 13 games against the Rangers.
- Ryan McLeod: Keep an eye on McLeod tonight. He has torched the Rangers throughout his career, putting up 11 points in 10 games, including finding the scoresheet in all five games he has ever played at MSG.
- Streaking Skaters: Josh Norris and Bowen Byram have both registered four points in their last four outings, while Alex Tuch has found the scoresheet in consecutive games.
Scouting the Rangers
Despite sitting in eighth place in the Metropolitan Division with a 33-36-9 record, the Rangers are embracing the spoiler role. They have emerged victorious in five of their last six contests and looked incredibly dangerous doing it. Over the weekend, they pumped 12 combined goals past the playoff-hopeful Red Wings and Capitals.
Rookie Gabe Perreault enters tonight fresh off a hat trick against Detroit, which coincidentally helped officially clinch Buffalo’s playoff spot. Not to be outdone, Will Cuylle netted his own hat trick in a blowout win against Washington. Mika Zibanejad leads the team offensively with 75 points on the year.
A critical battleground tonight will be the faceoff dot. The Rangers are the absolute best in the NHL at the circle, winning 54.4% of their draws. Conversely, the Sabres struggle mightily in this department, sitting dead last in the league at 45.8%. Buffalo will also need to stay disciplined; New York boasts the third-best power play in the NHL, though they will be facing off against Buffalo’s elite penalty kill unit, which ranks sixth overall.
On This Date in Sabres History
As we gear up for a massive game with postseason seeding on the line, April 8th holds a special place in franchise lore. On this exact date in 1973, the Buffalo Sabres secured the first playoff victory in team history by defeating the Montreal Canadiens 5-1, propelled by a game-winning goal from the iconic Gilbert Perreault. Let’s hope that historical playoff magic is in the air tonight at MSG.
