It is nearly impossible to win a hockey game when you spot the opposing team a three-goal lead in the first eight minutes. That was the harsh reality for the Rochester Americans on Friday night at Blue Cross Arena. Despite a resilient pushback, dominating the shot clock through the middle frame, and a stabilizing relief effort in the crease, the Amerks simply couldn’t completely dig themselves out of that early hole, ultimately falling 5-2 to the Belleville Senators. A frustrating combination of opening-period goaltending woes, a deflating disallowed goal in the third period, and timely finishing from the visitors halted Rochester’s momentum and handed them a tough divisional loss.
Early Goaltending Woes Put Amerks in a 3-1 Hole Against Belleville
The opening twenty minutes at Blue Cross Arena was a whirlwind of emotions for the home crowd. Rochester controlled the opening faceoff, but a brutal stroke of bad luck set the tone when Matteo Costantini rang a heavy shot off the goal post. The Belleville Senators immediately scooped up the rebound, taking it down the ice to strike first at 1:44 with a goal from Garrett Pilon, assisted by Jamieson Rees.
Things unraveled quickly from there. At the 3:31 mark, a quick feed from behind the net found Xavier Bourgault, who buried it with help from Olle Lycksell and Philippe Daoust. That gave Belleville a 2-0 lead on just their first two shots of the game. The onslaught continued at 8:00 when Tomas Hamara netted a third goal on only the Senators’ fourth shot, assisted by Arthur Kaliyev and Graeme Clarke. This rough start prompted an immediate goaltending change, with Devon Levi being pulled in favor of Scott Ratzlaff after allowing three goals on four shots.
The swap in the crease seemingly sparked some life into the home team. After Hamara took a hooking penalty at 13:12, Rochester’s top-tier power-play went to work. Just under a minute later at 14:03, Konsta Helenius threaded a beautiful pass to Anton Wahlberg, who ripped a one-time shot into the back of the net to cut the deficit to 3-1, with Trevor Kuntar grabbing the secondary assist. Despite outshooting the Senators 12-7 in the opening period, Rochester heads into the intermission trailing by two, though they will start the second period on the man advantage following a late interference penalty drawn against Belleville’s Hayden Hodgson at 19:16.
Nadeau Strikes as Rochester Pours on the Pressure
The Americans opened the middle frame on the man advantage but were unable to find the equalizer before returning to full strength. It didn’t take long for them to strike at even strength, however. At the 3:12 mark, Olivier Nadeau found an opening and fired a perfectly placed short-side shot past the goaltender to cut the deficit to a single goal. Isaac Belliveau and Brendan Warren picked up the helpers on the play, making it a 3-2 game.
Following the goal, Rochester had to lean heavily on its penalty kill. Belliveau was sent to the box for tripping at 5:52, but the Amerks’ penalty killers successfully fended off the Senators’ attack. Penalty trouble struck again when Vsevolod Komarov was called for slashing at 8:22, putting the home team back on the defensive. Fortunately, Belleville’s Olle Lycksell took a tripping minor at 10:09, which negated the remainder of their man advantage. After a brief thirteen seconds of four-on-four hockey, Rochester enjoyed an abbreviated power play of their own but could not capitalize.
The Americans completely tilted the ice in the final minutes of the period, applying heavy offensive pressure and suffocating the Senators’ defense. Rochester dominated the shot clock, outshooting Belleville by a commanding 16 to 7 margin in the second twenty minutes. Despite the lopsided attack and a flurry of late chances, the Senators managed to hold onto their slim 3-2 lead heading into the second intermission.
Disallowed Goal and Late Empty Netter Seal Amerks’ Fate
The final period started with a tough break for the home squad. Just under three minutes into the period, the Senators extended their advantage to 4-2. After an initial Belleville breakaway attempt was turned aside, the AHL’s leading goal-scorer, Arthur Kaliyev, trailed the play and buried the loose rebound, with Philippe Daoust picking up the assist. Goaltender Scott Ratzlaff kept the game within reach shortly after, flashing the pads to make a massive save on yet another Belleville breakaway.
The Americans thought they had shifted the momentum and cut the lead back to one when Olivier Nadeau jammed a rebound into the back of the net. However, the celebration was short-lived. Following a video review, officials waved off the tally, ruling that Nadeau propelled the puck into the net with a kicking motion, keeping the score permanently at 4-2. Rochester earned a crucial opportunity to claw back into the contest when Graeme Clarke was called for holding at 9:15, but the Amerks’ power-play unit was unable to break through the Belleville defense.
Tensions boiled over shortly after when a massive hit delivered by Konsta Helenius ignited a multi-player scrum. When the dust settled, Helenius was handed four minutes of penalty time for interference and roughing, while Belleville’s Ryan O’Rourke received a two-minute roughing minor. The sequence put the Senators on a pivotal man advantage, but the Rochester penalty killers did an excellent job shutting down the passing lanes to kill off the penalty.
Desperate for late offense, the Amerks pulled Ratzlaff for an extra attacker with roughly three minutes remaining in regulation. The gamble unfortunately backfired, as Belleville quickly capitalized on the vacated crease. Xavier Bourgault netted his second goal of the night at the 18:07 mark, assisted by Kaliyev, to ice the 5-2 victory for the visitors. Despite the heavy action, both teams managed just five shots on goal apiece in the final twenty minutes of play.
Final Thoughts & Looking Ahead
It is always a tough pill to swallow when the box score doesn’t reflect the final result. Despite the lopsided 5-2 finish, the Rochester Americans actually dominated the offensive pace, outshooting the Senators by a massive 33-19 margin. Special teams were a bright spot for the home squad, with the Amerks capitalizing on one of their four power-play opportunities while the penalty kill remained perfect, shutting down all three of Belleville’s man advantages. In the crease, it was a highly unusual night. Devon Levi had an incredibly rare rough outing, allowing three goals on just four shots before being pulled early in the first period. Scott Ratzlaff stepped up admirably in relief to stabilize the game, turning aside 13 of the 14 shots he faced.
Offensively, Olivier Nadeau was the most active skater for Rochester, leading the team with five shots on goal and consistently driving to the net. Ultimately, though, the night belonged to Belleville’s top producers, who swept the game’s Three Stars. Xavier Bourgault took home first-star honors with a two-goal performance, Arthur Kaliyev earned the second star with a commanding three-point night (one goal, two assists), and Philippe Daoust claimed the third star after dishing out a pair of primary assists.
The Amerks will need to have a short memory, as they won’t have to wait long for a chance to bounce back. Rochester is right back in action at Blue Cross Arena tomorrow, Saturday, April 4th, for an early 5:05 PM evening puck drop against the Providence Bruins.
