Kuntar Plays Hero as Amerks Snap Nine-Game Slide in OT Thriller

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — It had been nearly a month since the Rochester Americans last tasted victory, and for a few tense minutes late in the third period on Friday night, it looked like that wait might extend even longer.

However, Trevor Kuntar made sure the Blue Cross Arena crowd went home happy.

Just 83 seconds into the extra frame, Kuntar buried a feed from Riley Fiddler-Schultz to secure a 4-3 overtime win over the Toronto Marlies. The victory officially snaps a season-long nine-game winless streak for Rochester (25-22-5-4) and provides a massive boost of momentum heading into the second half of this weekend’s home-and-home set.

The Anatomy of a Comeback (and a Response)

The Amerks appeared to have the game firmly in hand late in regulation. After goals from Olivier Nadeau and the surging Konsta Helenius gave Rochester a 2-0 cushion, Toronto’s Matthew Barbolini cut the lead in half early in the third.

When Vsevolod Komarov restored the two-goal lead with a long-range blast at the 16:15 mark of the final frame, the “W” felt certain. But the North Division rival Marlies had other plans. With their goaltender pulled, Toronto stunned the home crowd by scoring twice in a span of just 21 seconds to knot the game at 3-3 and force overtime.

Despite the late-game collapse, Rochester didn’t blink. They controlled the puck for nearly the entire overtime period before Kuntar’s heroics ended the skid.

Standout Performances & Milestones

  • Zac Jones Makes History: With an assist on the Komarov goal, Zac Jones reached the 50-point mark for the season. He is the first Amerks defenseman to hit that milestone since Zach Redmond’s prolific 2018-19 campaign.
  • Helenius Stays Hot: Konsta Helenius continued his tear, recording a goal and an assist. He now has 15 points in his last 12 games.
  • Ratzlaff Stands Tall: Rookie netminder Scott Ratzlaff earned the win with a 31-save performance. It was his third consecutive start making at least 30 stops, a promising sign for the 21-year-old.
  • The Debut: Forward Chris Douglas, signed to an amateur tryout (ATO) earlier this week, made his professional debut and recorded an assist on the Helenius goal.

Reporter’s Notebook

This win was more than just two points in the standings; it was a psychological exhale. The Amerks hadn’t won at home since before the New Year began in earnest, and losing a two-goal lead in the final three minutes could have broken a team already struggling with confidence. Instead, they showed some much-needed backbone in overtime.

The rivalry continues tomorrow, and you can bet the Marlies will be frustrated after dropping eight of their last nine games that have gone past regulation.
