Sabres’ Streak Snapped: Late Chychrun Strike Stuns Buffalo in 2-1 Loss

BUFFALO – For two weeks, the Buffalo Sabres were the unstoppable force of the NHL. On Thursday night at KeyBank Center, they finally met a wall they couldn’t climb.

Despite a dominant opening frame and a vintage performance from the defensive corps, the Sabres saw their season-high eight-game winning streak vanish in the final moments of regulation. Jakob Chychrun’s snap shot with just 1:33 remaining lifted the Washington Capitals to a 2-1 victory, leaving a sellout crowd in stunned silence.

The Defining Moment

With the game seemingly destined for overtime, the Capitals (33-27-7) found the narrowest of openings. Aliaksei Protas battled behind the Buffalo net, emerging to fire a blind, backhand feed into the right circle. Chychrun didn’t miss, beating Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (19 saves) to the far side to halt Buffalo’s historic run.

A Tale of Two Games

The Sabres (40-20-6) looked poised to make it nine straight during a lopsided first period. Buffalo outshot Washington 15-3 in the opening 20 minutes, sustained by a heavy forecheck that forced the Capitals into survival mode.

Sam Carrick provided the early fireworks at 6:02 of the first. Following a brilliant individual effort by Beck Malenstyn, who looped behind the net to draw the defense, Carrick found himself alone at the back door for an easy tap-in. It was Carrick’s 6th of the season and appeared to be the start of another Buffalo track meet.

However, Washington netminder Charlie Lindgren had other plans. Lindgren turned aside 29 shots, including several Grade-A chances during a second-period Buffalo power play, keeping the Capitals within striking distance.

Momentum Shifts

The tide turned early in the second period when Washington’s rookie sensation Ryan Leonard intercepted a clearing attempt intended for Logan Stanley. Leonard walked into the right circle and snapped a shot past Luukkonen’s glove to tie the game at 1-1. It was Leonard’s third goal in as many games, and it seemed to sap the early energy from the Sabres’ bench.

Buffalo was forced to navigate the contest without leading scorer Alex Tuch, who was a late scratch due to what Ruff described as a “tweak” suffered during the morning skate. While the Sabres welcomed trade deadline acquisitions Tanner Pearson and Luke Schenn to the lineup for their team debuts, Tuch’s absence was felt on a top line that struggled to find its usual rhythm.
